Teachers do care so much and there is so much they can't control :(

Bismillah, Assalamualaikum Myspace Icons

For the past 2 weeks, I had been quite idle. This is because I had no work given and nothing to really do except planning lessons for 3 Form 1 classes whereby there would be 2 or 3 periods only every day and I didn't know whether I should revel in that condition or otherwise. At the end of the day, I come out grateful because I want to just bask in whatever moment I get regardless whether its -ve or +ve as I should just live for the moment and do my very best at whatever comes MySpace

Now that I am teaching 2 Form 3 and 3 Form 5 classes, the pressure has trickled in and I like the challenges I get but spurn the strain from over thinking on THE VERY BEST WAY TO DEAL with these classes as their trials are coming up and I am so freaked out!

Sometimes I think to myself, why am I always putting these extra burden on myself whereas I could just mound all those PMR and SPM past years questions and enjoin for my students to do them and then we could discuss the answers together. But that's just the thing, I can't seem to want to do that because doing too many exercises and drillings would result in my students being bored, memorizing without understanding and lastly, that's just not what English is all about! However, not doing past years questions is also not the way to deal with students in the exam-oriented system. Are you confused? Well, I am MySpace

So my solution is to strike a balance. Once a week, the students have to do past years questions especially the Form 3 as PMR Trial Examination is just around the corner and they have to really start to burn the midnight oil in order to just pass and for the students who have a history of passing the English paper will have to strive to get at least a good B or target higher to achieve an A. I learnt that teachers need to be realistic and save those students that has potential whereas set a different target for those students deem not being able to make it through even a low pass.

Striking a balance between exercises and drillings as well as language activities and all those other activities I learnt back in my 6 years of study worked well so far and both I and my students look forward to teaching and learning. So far, I have managed to carry out 3 types of Journal Writing such as Personal Journal Writing (like from the movie, Freedom Writers whereby students get to write whatever they want with no word limit), Dialogue Journals (I gave students 1 question concerning a topic on their novel or the literature that they have learnt and students need to respond and I will give feedbacks once a week for this type of journal, thanks Nani for the idea at practicum!) and Persuasive Journals for the lower achievers as in this case, students should only write 1 sentence a day. So far so good and this is probably due to the fact that I got the 1st 2 classes of Form 5 and the 1st 2 classes of Form 3 so they understood instructions fairly well and they were gamed for the subject although some of them grapple and struggle with English. On the other hand, I did get the last class of Form 5 where there are 20 students but sometimes only 10 students are present in the class! Well, that's fine by me as long as there are some students willing to learn hence I would teach in whatever way I can.

Moreover, I am also doing Readers Theatre with those 4 upper classes and they seem to be very enthusiastic about practicing and performing and I can't wait either. The Form 3 will have to start after trials whereas the Form 5 will be doing so in the month of August. So far so good indeed~

As you can probably sum up, the upper classes are very responsive and I feel fine teaching them. Even if their English is not good but they want to learn and that's what matters the most. Apart from that, their attitudes make me delighted to teach them more and I almost always feel good when teaching them and when they learn from me. Alhamdulillah, it has been such a REZEKI to be teaching like this and at times, I feel like a lecturer because I get to do things that my lecturers did back in my degree studies with the amount of students and also with students' kind of personalities.

As for the last class of Form 5, I had to practically force them to learn, and even to write! Some students still want to sleep and I gave in to that after countless compelling but I do end up feeling frustrated. I had already ask the other teachers and even they said that there is not much they can do to coerce these students to learn as they are already mature (supposedly!) enough to understand what they're in school for. It bewilders me really on what I could do because after a week of coming up with ideal activities for these students, some of em still refuse to participate and learn. I said to myself that I just want to leave them be but sometimes, there's a niggling feeling that I just can't and I try to shove that feeling out! I resorted to reading but there seem to be no remedy for such cases as there is to just keep on trying. I am trying but for how long? and shouldn't I just focus on the students that do want to learn? MySpace

I pray hard and pray well that I'm just as good as I'll ever be but in the meantime, I'm not just a teacher but also a student as I am constantly learning on whatever it takes to sprinkle that miracle dust to my students not just for them to pass English but also for them to like the knowledge that I give to them~

Believe it when I say that:

Teachers do care so much and there is so much they can't control.

Change is Invigorating!

Bismillah, Assalamualaikum Myspace Icons

[Please click to make the picture bigger, at my most favourite comic strip of all time, Calvin & Hobbes and read how true yet cynical way of accepting change!]

I know that most of the time I am jolly by golly but really, lemme tell you that I wasn't on my first week of posting. Even if you didn't wanna know, I still wanna write and actually when I'm writing this, it's not just for me but also to my friends and especially to my coursemates of 6 years as well as to my beloved roommate of 6 years whom I miss truly madly deeply badly!

It sucks huh to get someplace far from home? and it's not that great to always be under your parents' armpits, haha, direct translation :p

So what do we really want?

Beats me, I don't know either because right about now, I consider myself as having it easy but will embrace the challenges more strongly ( I hope! InsyaAllah.)

In the 1st week of posting to someplace unknown, I was BITTER, yes, that was the word!

BITTER because:

1. Why la the Pahang state wants the budak2 Shah Alam and why can't the Selangor state call us back to our hometown since the Pahang state did that to their anak2 Pahang! Urgh!

2. Why can't it be a Chinese TESL teacher placed at that school since the majority of the students in that school are chinese? That would have sorted out the communication problems, why me?

3. For my friends who have to teach other subjects, I really think that's unfair! Well, yeah, it's supposed to be a challenge (everything is always a challenge huh) but we didn't take TESL for 6 freaking years for nothing! and if the state called us to fill in the empty vacancy for the post of an English teacher then why must the principal subject us to teach other than our option? In universities and other teaching institutions, there are all those fresh graduates from every options possible so what gives?! All this confounds me really...

I know that sometimes I have a hard time accepting change and although I know it's inevitable, I always keep wondering why things have to change and what I could've done to kept things the same but I always remind myself that change might not be such a bad thing as I may not know the reasons now, but I'm sure one day it will all come together and make sense, InsyaAllah, like the saying -> 'Everything happens for a reason.'

Alhamdulillah, I have pushed the bitterness away from me and I want nothing from it except that sometimes, some events make me so mad. but, Allah is Great. That should sum up a lot of things MySpace

Sometimes Life comes around, And it knocks you down, Just get back up When it knocks you down

Bismillah, Assalamualaikum Myspace Icons

I'm home for the 2nd weekend and actually, surprisingly I am not that severely homesick anymore except there's just nothing to do or see or go if I stayed for the weekend and if my friend cum longtime Shah Alam comrade wants to go back home then I'm all for it!

Alhamdulillah, I am really starting to adjust and adapt slowly to the surroundings and the best part is that I don't really hafta fork out much money so it's really cool to envisioned the money that I'll be able to really save up for the future and first salary InsyaAllah will be due next month so ehem ehem, sape tak malu bole la mintak belanja, LOL :D

Alhamdulillah again that I have happily accepted with an open heart and mind that indeed Allah has always given me everything and the very best just that sometimes Allah gives me something disheartening in order to achieve goodness ^_^

and that is the secret to me bouncing back on my 2nd week of teaching at a new school!

Acceptance!

I learn to not only accept the fact that I'm there but also to accept that I am
an optimist,
a great teacher!
Hey, I did my very best at practicum and I can do it again!
I embrace challenges, yes, give it to me!

I also learn to accept the students even the unruly ones! But it was not so on the 1st week as I remembered, every teacher warned me to be fierce even the principal and the discipline teacher gave me a cane because he said that every teacher need to be equipped with a cane if not to punish then to threaten. I shook off that notion because even when my beloved roomie told me to put on a ferocious face first when entering a class years ago, I never did and it worked because I still managed to be firm but friendly and I continued to put on a smile when I entered classes after classes at my practicum school. So I dared to think that I could pull it off again for the 1st school that I'm posted to but that's when I was wrong...

I wanted to do it, but I stop short because...

every teacher warned me to take absolutely no nonsense from the students because once they know I'm flexible as I openly showed my sweet side, they might twist and turn me around and step all over me!

It seems unfair right but I don't blame the teachers for the warning because it definitely sent shivers and I was anxious at what to expect as for the first 2 weeks, I got 3 Form One classes to teach. I got the first class which was the more academically-inclined students but they were so noisy if I did a language activity that I felt exasperated afterwards and wickedly thought that perhaps I should just give them things to copy down, huhu, but I couldn't, not yet anyway, hehe. However, there were also some boisterous students in that class and I nearly got angry so I learnt to raise the cane and threaten in the most psycho voice I could think of and smiled that if they geddit in their heads that they could ruin the lesson for everyone else then they thought wrong and I was secretly pleased when they sat down. and that was it.

I never believed in the cane and I dunwan to use it but now, I am considering that the cane is a tool to put some sense into that little heads of theirs that just because I'm new and cute and short and I smile too, that they could take advantage of me, well, they thought wrong, hmph! If I were a Transformers, I would have been that biggie helicopter Decepticon one, ganas sket! Autobots skema je :p

or I could be that Decepticon sucker robot, that really HUGE one! Wah! I could suck all those kids who refuse to learn and spit them out back a new person, haha! Ok, escapism sekejap :p

Anyhoo, I also had to constantly waved the cane up in the air for the Remove Class because they were too hyperactive! Even when they want to speak to their peers sitting beside, they would ear-piercingly scream, aaa, bengang tau tak bengang! huhu..

Other times, I restrain the laughter I get such as there was one time, this kid started to sweep the floor at the back of the class all of a sudden and I asked him what he was doing and he simply said "menyapu la cikguuu" and I was like, okayyy, I'm in front teaching my socks off and you wanna sweep the class! and some kids were stifling giggles and then I turned with my back to the students to repress my own chuckle (ape kena laaa dgn budak ni, LOL). and then he started to come to the front eagerly sweeping and I put on a straight face and said "lepas awak dah sapu situ, awak sapu sini plak" and he nodded and swept to the place I mentioned and after that, he just sat down like nothing happened! AAAAA!!! Help!!! Which world am I in now!! *speechless*

There's also the secret that I try to imagine that the students in this school are just like the ones in Big Pumpkin, the ones I find adorable and raring to learn although they are academically-challenged and this works! Conversely, the kids there are nothing like Big Pumpkin because Big Pumpkin kiddies were something special but then again, when I conceive the students there to be someone I wanted in a way, I smiled more and change tactics because I gave them more credit than they thought I would have and they also learn to embrace me.

I don't want to be the teacher that just because the students misbehave, I had to start labelling them and turn my back on them. It's just a matter of time and psychologically handling these students with or without the cane. and I wanna learn~

Just started working and already 1 MC

Bismillah, Assalamualaikum Myspace Icons

I got an MC on Wednesday because I was sick the whole of Tuesday and it was just the 2nd day of work!

The doctor was also perplexed because I kept on vomiting the whole day even though I ate. and I cried a river :'(

The doctor said that it wasn't food poisoning because I didn't get diarrhea neither was it gastric because I ate although I threw up everything I ate, so what could it possibly be?!

After interrogation, the doctor said that it could be that I was not used to the surroundings and that there was something that aggravated me like the food that I ate or perhaps the water. Whatever it was, not even the doctors could really tell. Not only was I physically unwell but I was also emotionally unstable so it only made my health worsen. The doctor could sensed that and the old man tried to comfort me and gave me, like, all the benefits of living there and I sobbed uncontrollably.

As a result of my stomach's involuntary spasms and the loss of fluid in my body, I became weak on Wednesday and Thursday and I was so sensitive that I almost always feel like crying.

I am no doctor but I came to the conclusion that I was literally HOMESICK! Yes! What else could it be! I was just gloomy and I wasn't even my usual cheery self :(

But, Alhamdulillah, when I was sick, I prayed and reflected a lot on what happened and I focus on the +ve side of me being there rather than at home and that's why I bounce back and regain my jolly side on Friday. I smiled and the tears no longer threaten to fall (so far a good start anyway)

There are many things that I should be grateful for anyway and I would like to apologize to my family members especially my parents and to my friends if I cause unnecessary concern but in my defense, I just needed TIME to get used to a whole new experience.

The benefits of working there was that:

All the staff and teachers are really nice and hospitable and they were really worried about me when I was sick. A teacher bought me food and one bought me isotonic drink and my housemates rushed to my side when I vomited and rubbed my back and rushed me to the clinic. I am so touched :')

I live in front of the school so I don't have to drive meaning that I could save up on fuel. But sometimes my housemates want to drive so I went along for the ride.

The cost of living there is low. Rent is cheap. Most stuffs can be haggled. Food and drinks can be purchased for a song. All this also means that I can really save up for a house and to go on holidays again, whee!! and psssttt, for next year :p

The school is in a rural area and there are not many students. There are 5 classes in every forms and 1 class comprised of around 30 students which should be an advantage. The class is based on streamlining and from what I heard, the academically inclined students have good attitudes as well as good academic results whereas the students in the lower achiever classes have really appalling behaviour in addition to not wanting to learn! I always think that even if a pupil is slow in their academic but if they show keen interest in wanting to learn that it would be okay and I am willing to go to extremes to teach but in this case, the students do not want to learn at all as they had come to school because their parents force them to and all they do is mess things up for their peers and also the teachers. But still, the number of students is not much so that should be an opportunity for me.

I am the second English teacher there so I will be trusted with Form 3 and Form 5 and they have their trials coming up and I'm really freaked out! But this is good as it is challenging and I should be constantly on my feet racking my brain on how to make them perform even better! Most English teachers there are not from the English option so they really tried their best to teach the subject that they had to teach so I should be grateful that I still get to teach my most beloved subject.

My school is pretty relaxing coz the principal don't give too much work and the staff have a way of being efficient when it comes to dividing task so I should be glad that I'm not too bogged down with work.

The place where I am teaching is only 3 hours away from Shah Alam, oh come on kan! And I am home on the first weekend so Alhamdulillah dapat jugak balik! There are 3 routes from there to Shah Alam. I could take the KL-Karak Highway-Temerloh-Bera or the Highway to Seremban-Kuala Pilah-Bahau-Bera. The 3rd one I forgot.

So now I will only focus on the +ve side because I need to stay strong and be patient for at least a year...InsyaAllah~

Then do ye remember Me; I will remember you. Be grateful to Me and reject not faith.

You Don't Know What You Got Until You Say Goodbye

Bismillah, Assalamualaikum Myspace Icons

Today is Friday, 17th July 2009 and I am home!

HOME SWEET HOME! (Is this big enuff coz I just want to scream out LOUD!)

It's been a WEEK of actual work for me...err...lemme rephrase that...

It's been a WEEK of...well, yes, I'm working now as an English Teacher at a National School somewhere in Pahang and 10 minutes from Negeri Sembilan and I won't tell readers of the exact place or even the school's name because I wanna write lotsa things about the happenings of my workplace that it would be inappropriate to mention, so I am working but I am not really working...

It is with great embarrassment that I will now share what happened in that 1 week...

I departed to Temerloh, Pahang on Sunday afternoon for the early morning briefing the next day (Monday) and checked in a hotel *wipes tears, I feel all grown up!* :p

On Monday, 13th July 2009, I was reunited with fellow coursemates of 6 years, actually just the 4 of em, because all the Shah Alam people got Pahang and the Pahang people had their hometown back. So the authorities just had to torture us by only announcing where the hell in Pahang would we actually be situated at NOON! Geez! It's a good thing that the talks were informative and interesting (well, it does involved my career so I can't really be ignorant!) but the suspense was killing me!! and I wish I could choke someone at that moment! Eee! [gritted teeth!]

When the time finally came, I was handed an envelope and I opened it on the way to my seat from the stage, haha, tak sabar sgt! and I was like, WWWWHHHAAATTTT!!!! WWWHHHHEEERRREEEE!!! *BLANK*

The funny thing was that I was just NUMB! This is for the reason that I have never even heard of the place let alone can imagined how my life could be teaching in that place. I couldn't say or react anything because I had no idea whatsoever and not even my friends from Pahang could help me out, huhu

I was independent enuff to actually drive there and found the hidden place like some kind of Indiana Jones, haha, and my first impression was, ah, rural (again!) but not pastoral at all :(

I moved in to a small but quite long 1 storey house and got a big room to myself with only a mattress to buy and one of those cloth-like-cupboard. Wah! I can't believe I'm actually buying furniture on my own and I really wanted Mama to just sent in a lorry carrying those things to me, haha, biarla!

All the staff and teachers at school is nice to me, and the students have not defied me yet then why izzit that I built up so much pressure inside of me that I fell sick and was on MC on Wednesday?!

and I don't even know why so stay tuned!

The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky

Bismillah, Assalamualaikum Myspace Icons

"If anyone is upset, I won't tell them that people are starving in China or anything like that because it wouldn't change the fact that they were upset. And even if somebody else has it much worse, that doesn't really change the fact that you have what you have. Good and bad.

Just like what my sister said when I had been in the hospital for a while. She said that she was really worried about going to college, and considering what I was going through, she felt really dumb about it. But I don't know why she would feel dumb.

I'd be worried, too. And really, I don't think I have it any better or worse than she does.

I don't know. It's just different. Maybe it's good to put things in perspective, but sometimes, I think that the only perspective is to really be there. Because it's okay to feel things. And be who you are about them."

Beware of Brainwashers!

Bismillah, Assalamualaikum Myspace Icons

There are many kinds of Brainwashers out there and even I could be one of em.

This is because everyone would like to impose their ideologies and whatnots and influence people to a forcible indoctrination so as to induce someone to give up political, social or religious beliefs and attitudes and to accept contrasting regimented ideas.

What these Brainwashers do not realize is that some people have already stood their ground, have already stand up straight to what they believe in and hold ever so strongly to their own principles so that no matter what these Brainwashers do or say, that some people will not be swayed to betray what they have already believed in.

But these Brainwashers are a dangerous lot because some of em come in groups, BIG ones and they lure some people with sweet promises and insert lots of questions attacking your inner and outer thoughts and you are left wondering of the truth and the lies and it's confusing what the Brainwashers do to you that you scrambled to find help and you would most definitely need all the help you can get!

These persuasion by propaganda is indeed nerve-racking as you are put in the limelight and you can't be the monkey in the middle, you have to choose sides and you have to make the right choice! Ah, the agony of it all!

You just can't say you're neutral because even though the Brainwashers do something bad but just because it's not so obvious, you cannot turn a blind eye and a deaf ear. What you could do is RESEARCH! read as much as you can, ask more knowledgable people on the matter and delve into the issues so that the truth will prevail because the truth is indeed out there!

What's more important is that
YOU HAVE TO UPHOLD WHAT YOU BELIEVE!
but is what you believe according to what's right?!

Are Brainwashers Brainwashed?

Are brainwashers themselves brainwashed?
Have their brains also been squashed?
Have they been indoctrinated
To spew out brainwashing most hated?

Have they soaked up false reasons
To commit on their fellow man ungodly treason
Horrific lies they see as creative truth
Targeting our naïve and vulnerable youth

Yes, they are brainwashed indeed
While brainwashed their hearts will never bleed
Brainwashing has stultified their very soul
Now to brainwash others is their deadly goal
